Much ado about a tomb

Jesus Family Tomb
It even hit the front page of CNN! So there is a lot of press about this topic. The scholarly world hasn’t been sitting idly though. If you want to see what they say, check this out for a nice summary

The Earthly Kingdom of God

In keeping with my posts titled “The Politics of the Message 1, 2, 3“, and with my series in Glad Tidings (A Vision of the Kingdom… Setting the Scene…) I would like to talk more about the Kingdom of God, and perhaps clarify our language when we speak about it. So, you could almost think [...]

Half Christian?

(Got this devotional in my email this week from Pastor Steve Taylor.  I thought it would be good to post here for some thoughts and discussion)
Are you only half a Christian if you’ve only received half of the Gospel? Maybe that sounds like a ridiculous question but it’s a very real concern that I’ve had for [...]

I love quotes

And this is a good source so far

Actually, I do find Christians these days who seem to have largely wasted their lives. They were converted to Christ but they have never sought to go on to an increasing knowledge of God. There is untold loss and failure because they have accepted the whole level of [...]

Encouraging words from the second century

A partial translation of a letter explaining Christians

Christians are indistinguishable from other men either by nationality, language or customs. They do not inhabit separate cities of their own, or speak a strange dialect, or follow some outlandish way of life. Their teaching is not based upon reveries inspired by the curiosity [...]

Being Different.

Saw an interesting article on USA Today online:
Christian Modesty?
It speaks of a small but growing number of Christians, especially women, who are adopting a modesty in their dress, even by wearing a simple head-covering.  I have heard some reasoning for not following this example from a historical perspective, although I haven’t seen this evidence first hand.  People have said that the [...]

Meekness

What does this word mean?  In the OT it is often interchanged with “humble.” (I won’t be talking about the OT usage in this post however).  In the NT different translations will render the greek word praus as meek or gentle.  Lets look at the word’s definition:

M-W.com – “meek” – 1 : enduring injury with patience [...]

Children of God?

I have recently said in a sermon something like the following:  “we are not all the children of God…we are all God’s creation, but actually the Bible says that those who have not repented are by nature the children of wrath.”
I was challenged however in my own reading recently when Paul speaks on Mars Hill [...]

Gospel Terms – “Christ”

I often hear as a rebuttal to the gospel being about the Kingdom of God and the King of that Kingdom, Jesus the Messiah dying so that man might enter that Kingdom words that echo Paul’s thoughts in I Corinthians 15:1-4:
“Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which [...]
