Being Different.

Saw an interesting article on USA Today online:

Christian Modesty?

It speaks of a small but growing number of Christians, especially women, who are adopting a modesty in their dress, even by wearing a simple head-covering.  I have heard some reasoning for not following this example from a historical perspective, although I haven’t seen this evidence first hand.  People have said that the prostitutes of Corinth didn’t follow this sort of practice, so the Christians did to mark themselves as different.  The reasoning is because we don’t have this problem today, this practice is obsolete.  Is that the case?

I have some teens in my youth group who are very serious about modesty.  They are so serious that young people (girls especially) should be modest and honorable that they have appealled with my wife and I to teach on the subject themselves!  It was wonderful to hear their hearts as their shared from the Scriptures.

The reason why this would be deemed as “odd” or old fashioned is because our society is driven by the desire to fit in.  Even in high schools today where the dress and behavior of some students seems to be doing anything but fit in, they in fact are no different than their counterparts in other high schools who are all doing the same thing.

Where is all of this coming from?  The god of this age is working hard to gather together the nations so that they would once again try to say:

“Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4)

So the women in this article are going about their lives in a way that they will not follow the ways of the world – even if that means they will be marked out as different or odd. They I imagine they have found a group to be a part of much more glorious than any social club.

You know how you can be different and not fit into this age?  Obey the words of Jesus.

  • – What do you think about what they are doing?
  • – What do you think about Paul’s words in I Corinthians 11:5?

  1. Victor,

On my blog, the first article I published was Bro Boris ” A call to the churches in America”, linked below, in which he relates how God personally delivered the church in Russia in the early 1900’s and brought them to China, then to Canada and America. This journey involved many hardships and also many miracles. After they came to America, he relates how the miracles stopped as they turned from relying on God’s provision to seeking the American dream. Interestly, he comments on modesty, men and women’s dress, the headcovering – all the things that we conveniently excuse because they don’t fit the paradigm we’ve grown used to in the modern church.

The call to the churches in America is a must read in these last hours for Christians who are serious about pleasing the Lord, and who wish to be found blameless before the Lord when he comes to gather his on.

    I’m linking it here again.

I really wonder sometimes. If women don’t want to wear headcoverings, and men don’t want to remove their hats – and they actually read their Bible – one has to think they don’t care about honoring God in their action, only in their theory.
