Animal Sacrifices To Resume?

YNET News Article

There are a few interesting things about these articles.

First off, that there is even discussion about this topic is rather amazing knowing the Bible speaks about the Temple needing to be rebuilt.  There are people discussing these issues who are serious and are campaigning for it to be a reality.

Secondly, it also shows how amazing God’s timing is.  The natural progression for the people of God was intended to move form the Mosaic Covenant (in which animal sacrifice and the Temple system were critical) to the Messianic Covenant (in which the sacrifice of Jesus the Messiah and the church model are central).  Soon after the death of the Messiah, the Temple itself in Jerusalem was destroy – if it could be any clearer to the Jews that God wanted things to change.

In order for them to truly obey the law of Moses, they need animal sacrifice!  Without a Temple or while in the diaspora, they have been unable to do this and thus unable to obey God.  Instead they have changed the ways intended by God and replaced the daily sacrifice with daily prayers.  Although an admirable attempt to continue their service to God – this is not His plan.

Consider the following:

Hebrews 9:11-15 (NLT) – So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.

Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.

Hebrews 10:19-22 – Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Finally, two quotes in the YNET article above stood out to me:

Asked if his organization sought to rebuild the third Temple, Stein’s answer was unequivocal.  “We want to establish the Temple again.  Unfortunately, standing in our way is a hostile regime, the Israeli government, and rabbis who for political interest don’t want this to happen.”

According to mainstream Jewish thought, animal sacrifices must not be carried out outside of Temple, which itself cannot be rebuilt by human endeavor, but will be rebuilt upon the arrival of the messiah.

We see a difference in thinking here for sure – but one thing that is evident in both perspectives is that anyone who could offer a new temple built in Jerusalem and provide peace for Israel and her enemies would be looked at very favorably….hmm…wonder who could do that?

So, what do you think?
