Are you distracted?

A man showed up at church with his ears painfully blistered. After the service, his concerned pastor asked “What in the world happened to you?”

The man replied, “I was lying on the couch yesterday afternoon watching a ball game on TV and my wife was ironing nearby. I was totally engrossed in the game when she left the room, leaving the iron near the phone. The phone rang and keeping my eyes glued to the television, I grabbed the hot iron and put it to my ear.”

“So how did the other ear get burned?” the pastor asked.
“Well, the guy called again.”

Now, there is a guy who is focused on what he was doing. The things around him don’t even distract him. Look at someone who had the same focus:

“Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity” Hebrews 6:1

The author of Hebrews wants Christians to not be satisfied with where they are at now. He wants them to move on and grow to maturity. This takes focus, dedication, and a clear vision of the goal. It is easy to get comfortable in our Christianity. Our society brings it upon us. Work hard enough all your life and you can sit back and enjoy things. That is what we hear. Yet, the Christian is not supposed to be lounge around, we are to be growing and working for God.

Maybe you are really busy and you aren’t praying like you used to. Perhaps you don’t read your Bible like you did once before. Possibly you have not spoken the gospel to anyone for as long as you can remember. If you cant think of the last person you went out of your way to bless, this devotional is for you.

Don’t let the things of this life distract us. Let us press on to maturity by reminding ourselves of the Christian essentials we should be focusing on daily.
